Shelley Doty - Nectar Stage, Gay Pride Parade, 2001

By Liz Pisco

I made my way through the crowds on my bicycle at the Gay Pride parade - destination - The Nectar Stage, the first stage at Pride ever devoted completely to women musicians. As the parade ended and people walked up from Market Street, on came Oakland based guitarist extrordinaire, Shelley Doty. We had a moment to talk before she was scheduled to play and I found out that she has been super busy working 15 hour days as an extra on the set of one of the upcoming Matrix sequels. Maybe it was her stunning beauty, or her sense of humor, or maybe someone just recognized her enormous talent and cast her as a warrior! Considering she is an avid comic book collector and self-proclaimed computer geek, I can only imagine how much fun she must be having.

Dressed in full rock star regalia, leather pants, tank top, dreds bobbing back and forth, Shelley wowed us playing solo before her set with Kindness. Opening with the song "Teeth" off her album, "Possible Reasons for My Insomnia", she showed us that the guitar is truly an extension of her body as her fingers literally danced over the strings. She wasted no time getting the crowd involved with a sing-a-long version of "For So Long". Shelley is so comfortable performing, and obviously loves playing music, the audience immediately falls in love with her and without hesitation we are all smiling and joining in. Unfortunately time was limited and after only two songs, she closed with the sultry and dark sounding "Seems Unlikely" which showcases her earthy vocals and interesting melodies.

Shelley Doty is so fun to watch is because she knows who she is and is able to share it with us - it's as though she's having a party and we're invited!
